Morris Edges Aitken By Single Point To Win Winter Series Title
Seb Morris (Marford, Wrexham) is the 2012 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Winter Series with Michelin Champion following a tense finale at Rockingham on Saturday, 10th November – the Fortec Motorsports racer shading team-mate Jack Aitken (Kensington) by just a single point.
Victory during a wet round three on Saturday morning enabled 16-year-old Morris to take a 10 point advantage into the last race, but a win there for Aitken on a drying track – only the newcomer's fourth race in Formula Renault BARC – meant a nail-biting conclusion.
Finishing fourth on the road in round four, having had to work incredibly hard to keep team-mate Hongwei Cao and Middlehurst Motorsport's Chris Middlehurst (St. Helens) at bay during the closing stages, Morris actually earned the points for third with second place finisher Matthew Brabham ineligible to score due to his international racing licence.
Brabham, who made an inspired call along with his Cliff Dempsey Racing crew to run with slick tyres on the rapidly drying track while the main opposition all went with treaded Michelins, also posted the fastest lap of the race by a significant margin. Due to the young category rookie's non-scoring status, Aitken picked up the fastest lap bonus points but they weren't quite enough.
As well as securing a title victory in his maiden season of single-seater racing, the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Winter Series with Michelin crown also marks Morris third car racing championship win in as many years – a remarkable tally.
"I honestly didn't think I'd be champion after Brands but we've turned it around this weekend", said Morris, "The team has done an absolutely fantastic job in getting the car to where it is, we found a perfect set-up here, the car has been absolutely spot-on.
"I'm really happy to win a championship in my first year of single-seaters, the whole weekend has been mega and the championship has been fantastic. I really think there have been some seriously talented drivers in this Winter Series – it's been very strong and a hard championship to win."
Renault Triumphs At The Future Car Challenge
Renault collected four awards at the annual Brighton to London RAC Future Car Challenge on Saturday 3rd November winning categories for the ZOE supermini and Kangoo Van Z.E. as well as scooping the overall prize.
The event, sponsored by RAC Motoring Services was first introduced in 2010 to showcase low energy use vehicles. It features competitors driving electric, hybrid, hydrogen and low-emission conventional petrol and diesel cars on a 63-mile route from Brighton to London, using the least amount of energy as possible. The event is a real-world test of current and future vehicle technology.
ZOE, Renault’s new 100% electric supermini won the categories of Most Energy Efficient Small Car and the Best Pure Electric Vehicle. Kangoo Van Z.E. won the Most Energy Efficient Light Commercial Vehicle category. Against a wide range of competition including fully electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles, ZOE won the overall RAC Future Car Challenge for a production car.
Andy Heiron, UK Head of Electric Vehicles Programme, said, "I’m delighted to have won four out of 19 categories. We’re the only manufacturer offering such a wide range of fully electric vehicles to cover the main market sectors and appeal to both retail and business buyers. Our current three-model range has already been attracting a lot of interest, especially the unique Twizy. The proof of the pudding though is trying them out. We’re confident that after experiencing the refined and responsive driving experience of a purely electric vehicle, combined with the financial and environmental benefits of switching to an electric vehicle, potential buyers will be smitten."
First Renault Wirral Customer Takes Delivery of Eye-Catching Twizy
Prenton-based IT Specialist Nick Axtell has become the first Renault Wirral customer to drive away a brand new Renault Twizy, resplendent in striking metallic black and orange, from the Woodchurch Road dealership.
As a self-confessed fan of Renault’s ground-breaking two-seater electric vehicle, the married father of two was instantly taken by the eye-catching appeal of Twizy when he saw the urban compact for the first time at an off-site event Renault Wirral held in June.
Then, after winning the use of a Twizy for the weekend when he made a successful bid during a fund-raising event at Prenton Primary School’s Summer Fair, Nick liked the vehicle so much he decided to order one after seeing it again at the Port Sunlight Festival.
Purchasing a Renault Twizy Colour, Nick personalised his choice with metallic black paint and the addition of orange wrap on the interior and exterior. Finished off with diamond-cut flame orange alloy wheels, Nick’s sensational Twizy is a true attention-grabber.
“We’re obviously delighted to have delivered our first Twizy, especially to a customer as enthusiastic about the Renault EV range as Nick”, said Renault Wirral New Car Sales Executive and EV Specialist Paul Sheridan, “The colour scheme he chose has made an already eye-catching vehicle look absolutely fantastic!”
Prior to taking delivery of his new purchase, Nick made a fun video called ‘Gettin’ Bizzy with the Twizy’ – which can be viewed online at You Tube – which was filmed when he had use of the Twizy display model from Renault Wirral through the Prenton Primary School prize auction. Since receiving his own Twizy, he has also joined the Renault Twizy Owners Club.
All three of Renault’s EV vehicles – Renault Twizy, Renault Fluence Z.E. and Kangoo Van Z.E. – are available to buy now from Renault Wirral’s Prenton dealership. Twizy carries a price tag starting at £6,690 on the road with a monthly battery lease of £45, including VAT, for a 36 month/4,800 miles per year agreement.
The Renault Fluence Z.E. saloon is available from £17,850 on the road, including the special £5,000 electric vehicle government grant, with battery lease priced at £76 per month, based on mileage of 6,000 per year over three years.
Kangoo Van Z.E., meanwhile, which can be leased and is also eligible for the government grant, can be purchased from £13,592, excluding VAT, with monthly battery hire from £60 based on an annual mileage of 6,000 over three years.

Renault Wirral Wins Renault Global Quality Award
A commitment to the highest levels of customer service has seen Renault Wirral receive an international award from Renault.
The Renault Global Quality Award is awarded every year by the manufacturer to recognise the dealers in its national network who provide the best customer service and commit to the highest standards in quality.
Four Renault dealerships in the UK have received the Global Quality award this year, including Renault Wirral, which were all recognised for their ongoing commitment to customer service. Regional manager Barry Jones attended the Renault Global Quality Award gala presentation event in Paris. His colleague Mark Whitaker who is general manager at Renault Wirral, was then presented with a winner's plaque and a financial reward for a dealer team night out by Mark Crockett, Renault UK's Director, Services and Quality, who visited the showroom on Woodchurch, Prenton, this week in order to personally congratulate the dealership staff and to present them with their award.
Mr Jones said: "The whole team here works extremely hard ensuring that our customers receive the very best service, and we're thrilled to receive the Renault Global Quality Award which recognises our consistently high standards of customer service across sales and aftersales and also rewards the whole team's contribution to our performance and results.
Renault Wirral employees raise money for charity
Four windswept employees from Renault Wirral raised more than £800 for charity after battling against the elements at the annual Wirral Coastal Walk.
The blustery weather failed to stop Shelly McDonald, Anita Sheard, Carole Burns and Steve Poucey from taking part in the 15-mile fundraising walk around the borough’s coastline which attracted thousands of people for the 25th year running. Carole, sales administrator at the dual dealership on Woodchurch Road, Prenton, and Anita and Shelly, who both work in the service departments, together with their friend Dawn raised £390 for the Claire House Children Hospice in Clatterbridge. Steve, who works as a technician along with his wife, Angie, raised just over £400 for St Johns Hospice in Wirral.
The walk started at Seacombe Ferry and took in New Brighton, Leasowe, Meols, Hoylake, West Kirby and Caldy before finishing at Thurstaston Country Park. Renault Wirral General Manager Mark Whitaker said: "I’ve very proud of the staff members who took part in the Wirral Coast Walk. They tell me it was very gruelling because of the strong winds but worth it for such deserving causes."
